Humans can survive for days or even weeks without food or water but only a few minutes without air. In a 24-hour period each person breathes around 400 litres of oxygen in their rested state and considerably more when exerting their bodies.

This means that humans are relatively bad users of respiratory air. Of the 21% oxygen contained in respiratory air the human organism can only use around 25%. 75% is expelled again unused – a reason why mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is possible.

As you get older, as a result of illnesses, stress, lack of exercise, unhealthy eating and environmental stresses the body’s ability to use oxygen in the most efficient way is reduced.
